Hello! My name is Simran Hans. I am a freelance writer, researcher and film programmer living in London.
I love lengthy advice columns, David Fincher and discussing how race, gender and popular culture intersect.
I struggle with instant coffee, team sports and the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, and sometimes I am a bad feminist.
I used to edit the online film journal Kubrick on the Guillotine, and have written for publications including the BFI, BuzzFeed, Dazed, The FADER, Film4.com, Lenny Letter, Little White Lies, VICE’S Munchies, New Statesman, NYLON, Pitchfork, Refinery 29, Sight & Sound and The Guardian.

I have appeared on discussion panels about film criticism at the Stockfish Film Festival in Reykjavik and at This Way Up in Manchester, about feminism and film as part of Bechdel Test Fest and MUBI + Little White Lies‘ “Doubles” series in London. I’ve also curated, hosted and spoken at live events in partnership with Aesthetica Short Film Festival, Barbican, Bechdel Test Fest, Bird’s Eye View, BFI, DocHouse, Dogwoof, Independent Cinema Office, Into Film, Little White Lies, London Short Film Festival, MUBI, Open City Documentary Festival, Scottish Queer International Film Festival, Sheffield Doc/Fest, Tate and Underwire Festival among others.
In 2013, international documentary and digital media festival Sheffield Doc/Fest selected me to sit on their Youth Jury. I promoted the festival on stage at the national press launch, and on air on BBC Radio Manchester, did some non-sleazy networking and even got to meet Michael Palin. I went on to work as part of the festival’s programming team in 2014, and sat on the London Film Academy Student Jury in 2015.
I also worked as lead researcher on BBC Radio 4’s three-part series The Business of Film, hosted by Mark Kermode, and on a forthcoming documentary feature film with Bend It Networks for BBC2.
